6:46 am
succession of storms. this week all is quiet. >> you even said sunshine in there. >> and sunshine later today. we have some cloudiness hanging tough right now, but a little later this afternoon we'll have sunshine. let's get to temperatures. reagan national now in the 30s. in fact, we're falling below the freezing mark here early north and west. those temperatures are close to 30. in fact, they are 30 now in gaithersburg. 30 in the city, 30 in gaithersburg and fredrick. let's see, 34 this morning out at dulles and we're in the 20s down in hagerstown. so there is colder air just off to our north and west. in fact, temperatures as you get out into ohio are in the teens right now. we're not going to be in the teens later this afternoon, but we will be a little on the cool side with highs expected to be only in the lower 40s. one to two sprinkles or showers well south and east. we're talking the lower eastern shore here early this morning. there you go, you can see it kind of fading off to the south and east. and it's a cold front that's been pushing through. it's been pushing through since this time yesterday and dragging with it a little bit of moisture and a lot of cloud cover. and the clouds will start to
6:47 am
break up, we'll show you the clouds here, they're just starting to break up. you see we're getting some thinning here in the clouds and off to the north and west and breaks out in ohio. so the trend will be after a lot of clouds early to get more and more sunshine in here this afternoon and it will become sunny later today, but cool with highs, as mentioned, in the low 40s. and cold tonight, our temperatures overnight even here in the city are likely to fall back near freezing. here is a look at the jet stream pattern for the week and we do have a dip in the jet stream. that's what's going to give us the cold conditions for the next couple of days with highs expected only to be in the upper 30s and low 40s. but it is a rather quiet weather pattern here for the next several days. in fact, we're not looking at any winter weather or even a chance for any rain around here for the next seven days. here's your accuweather seven- day forecast, 41 today, cold tonight, overnight low about 30. we'll be chilly thursday and friday. redskins game on sunday right now looks dry with temperatures in the low 40s, and a bit of a warming trend by early next week. we'll be back near 50 by tuesday.

so not a bad -- you know, this is january, not bad at all. >> that's right. >> hey, welcome back. >> happy to be back. happy new year to you. happy new year to you. happy new year, everybody. can i tell you how happy i am to hear you say redskins game on sunday in january, that's unbelievable. >> the happiest of new year's. >> absolutely right. >> at home too. >> that's right. fantastic. good morning, everybody. guess what it's time for? ask tony and tucker with a little help from our friend dave ross. this is a segment, of course, where we all put our heads together answering questions, weather or otherwise. the question from nicole johnson, she writes in, i'm a football fan, mostly the redskins. as i watch games, i notice the players will give their touchdown-winning footballs to a group of their prospective fans in the crowd. i am curious to know, if they, the players have to pay the nfl for the lost balls and if so how much? >> excellent question. >> good question. i notice this more and more this year than in past years >> that they're giving them
6:49 am
away? >> yeah. >> they used to give them away all the time. then they stopped for a while. >> that's right. >> and now often if it's a significant touchdown, the player will keep the ball. but sometimes they flip them up into the stands. >> from my understanding, yes, it does come out of the player pay check. >> that's what i understand too. >> i understand it's not very much, like a $25 deal. >> that's it? >> it's not like an exorbitant amount of money these guys pay. you're right, these guys are doing this more often this year. in the grand scheme of things, what is that? it's just a minimal amount of money. have your fun, throw the ball in the stands, do what you want to do. i always think of terrell owens because t.o. was the king, the signed ball. it was always a show. now, they would fine him. i think where people were getting confused, they would fine him for the celebration. >> for the theater. >> but the actual ball itself -- >> phenomenal theater. >> exactly. >> now, many, many years ago, the players didn't pay for it, the nfl just paid for it. >> correct. but then i think it became
6:50 am
happening every time, what do you care if it's not coming out of your check. >> i got a question. if you keep a football after scoring a touchdown, do you pay for it then? >> yeah. that's your ball. that's the nfl's property and you're taking the property, you gotta repay for the ball. that's my understanding. >> now, are more and more players keeping the balls, after a typical touchdown? >> i think so. i think a lot of these guys -- emmitt smith back when he played for the cowboys kept every one of his touchdowns and that's a lot because he scored all the time. >> you could sign them and give them away to charity or something. >> he would keep them, an equipment manager with hold onto those things. certainly for any milestone touchdown the guys are going to keep it. even if they don't ask for it, they'll say, here's the ball. i don't know that everybody keeps every one of them, unlime em et smith. he happened to be a guy that packratted every single score. >> i happened to see on the nfl channel during the last week or so their whole conspiracy thing
6:51 am
about the emaculate receptions. you know that guy has that ball and has it in a vault? a fan, who knows how much that ball is worth. but he's got it in a climate- controlled vault. >> did you and connor get any of the touchdowns sunday night? >> no. >> highlights. >> well, it was 90,000 of us out there. it was fantastic, one of the best games i've ever been to, so happy to be there with my son connor to share that moment with him. it's the loudest i've heard fed ex field. it was amazingly special to beat the cowboys, to really beat them, it meant something and on the board it went up nfc east division champs, the place just went crazy. my favorite moment from the game was as its winding down and the cowboys are desperately trying to do something and the clock is ticking down, it was like new year's eve, everyone is counting, nine, eight, seven, and at zero the place erupted. >> who probably wasn't counting
6:52 am
is tony romeo. >> hey, tony, here's your third interception. dpl they might be charging him for all kinds of things. hey, i'm a redskins fan through and through. so glad we beat the cowboys. feel bad for tony rommiesto. >> as we talked about before we started this second, 30 or 40 years from now connor will look back on and say i was there with my dad that night before he won those 10 super bowls, i was there when it all started. do you have any idea what the value of a football that the player throws in the stands is? >> well, it really depends on whose it is. certainly if rg3 throws the ball in the stands, that's going to go. they gotta be able to verify too. but if you can verify it's the actual football with rg3, boy, you put that sucker on ebay, look out. >> dave, thank you for joining us. appreciate. >> absolutely. >> nicole, hope we answer thad question for you. if you have a question you want answered, go to myfoxdc.com and click on the weather tab. before we throw to julie,

i just want to mention you'll notice her voice is a little scratchy this morning. you want to know why? >> perhaps she can tell you. is it from partying from new year's. >> maybe on sunday night she was at a certain game where it didn't go well. >> julie. how are you, julie? >>reporter: i tried. i was screaming. dave ross, work with me here. when they did that two-point conversion, weren't you, like, okay, this is getting interesting? >> i plead the fifth. >>reporter: i just knew it. i knew it. >> you deserve it, julie. >>reporter: i was thinking we're going to tie this up, we're going into overtime, this is what's happening, and he throws an interception. >> guess what. it didn't happen. >>reporter: you know what? i will say this, though, it was very, very just -- words cannot express seeing rg3 in person, honestly. that was awesome. i did enjoy that. >> it's like seeing the beetles. >>reporter: we'll leave that

to wisdom. earlier tony we played "here comes the sun," he didn't know who sang it. >> oh, wisdom. >>reporter: that's okay. eastbound 66 before the capitol beltway, the accident pulled over to the shoulder. lanes are open. you're backed up on manassas through fair oaks to the beltway. quickly let's pull up the cameras now we'll show you what's happening. southbound bw parkway gridlocked in laurel. there's also a delay for those traveling inbound on 50 leaving 202 headed in and to chefferly. southbound 270 tied up out at germantown to 124. that's a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. >> julie, thank you. a virginia woman is using her art to help the victims of superstorm sandy. erin hutchinson asked fellow quilters to send her colorful squares of cloth after seeing the damage in new york and new jersey. by christmas she received more than 1400 quilt squares at her home north of lexington. so far hutchinson has sent about 20 quilts to families affected by sandy. wow! a lot of good work there. one of the most popular
